Lau Gar Classes

All of our schools offer the student a range of techniques, progressing from beginner level, learning basic stances, kicks and defences through to more advanced techniques and weapons.

The Scotland Lau Gar syllabus includes traditional stances, hand and kick techniques and forms. Forms are predetermined patterns of techniques that tie together proper posture, balance, coordination and timing. In practising forms, the students are taught to defend themselves against a series of imaginary opponents, using a range of blocks and strikes. The modern day syllabus also incorporates these into set blocking and defence patterns, and walking drills with hand or foot strikes. These increase in complexity as the student progresses, and the students are encouraged to develop their own range of defence techniques.

Through teaching traditional forms and the techniques derived from them, our instructors work to help their students achieve a range of objectives, including:

  • Improving cardiovascular fitness and stamina
  • Improving co-ordination, balance, suppleness and strength
  • Enhancing self respect and self confidence
  • Enhancing concentration and focus
  • Developing effective defences against attack
  • Developing skills in the use of traditional weapons for display purposes

We work towards these through various class activities, such as aerobic and conditioning exercises, stretching, and application of the traditional techniques contained within the forms. Competition sparring is an optional addition to training. From time to time activities such as seminars or competitions are arranged.
